Canada recognises the UK as rabies-free, so pets need either a current rabies vaccination certificate or a vet certificate of 6 months’ residence. No quarantine for pet dogs.

- Before you travelRabies certificate or proof of residence
Dogs 8 months+ and cats 3 months+: a vet certificate (English or French) showing a current rabies vaccine — or a vet certificate that your pet has lived in the UK, which Canada recognises as rabies-free, for the 6 months before travel (dogs: or since birth). - Before you travelExport health certificate (EHC)
GOV.UK: pets going to a non-EU country need an EHC confirming they meet that country’s rules. Apply online (with an EXA form) and nominate the official vet who will sign it.
Watch out
- Puppies under 8 months travelling without their owner also need a vet health certificate issued no more than 72 hours before import, with distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus and parainfluenza vaccines.
- Pets under 3 months need no rabies paperwork.
- No paperwork on arrival? An inspector can order a rabies vaccine at your cost.
- Airlines have their own pet rules — check them before booking.
- These rules are for travel from England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland has its own.
